PDU Information
You Can Earn PDUs at PMI Global Congresses Toward Credential Maintenance
PMI supports the ongoing professional development of all of its credential holders and the maintenance of its credentials. PMI does this through its Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program.
What is a Professional Development Unit or PDU?
- A PDU is the measuring unit used to quantify approved professional development activities.
- PMI’s credential holders are required to earn a specified amount of PDUs in order to maintain their certification(s).
- PDU-qualifying activities must be related to project management topics that are substantially consistent with the knowledge areas and processes outlined in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) and involve appropriate expert resources.
- One PDU is earned for every one hour spent in a planned, structured learning experience or activity.

PMI Leadership Institute Meeting activities, the congress keynote speaker, presentations in the congress areas of focus and certain other congress activities qualify for PDUs. Exact PDU amounts for each eligible activity will be listed on the PDU Worksheet in the Congress Event Guide that all attendees receive on-site.
Total PDUs earned for attendance at a PMI global congress will vary depending on the specific activities a PMI credential holder attends. Credential holders can calculate their total PDUs on the PDU Calculation Worksheet also provided in the Congress Event Guide. After determining their earned PDU total, credential holders can submit PDU claims online or by using a print-friendly PDU Activity Reporting Form.
- PDUs for global congress activities should be submitted under PDU Category 3. The programme number required for claiming PDUs earned at congress activities is listed in the congress Event Guide.
- The Leadership Institute Meeting requires separate registration from the general congress registration. PDU calculations for Leadership Institute Meeting activities are listed on the overall PDU Calculation Worksheet in the congress Event Guide and the Leadership Institute Meeting Journal. All of these activities are registered under the same programme number within PMI's Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.) programme and are to be reported on the same activity reporting form. More information on the R.E.P. program.
*Supporting documentation for participation in congress or Leadership Institute activities should be kept in the credential holder’s personal files in case the claim is selected for PMI’s audit process. For more information about the CCR program, go to the CCR section of the respective credential handbook.
