Last year’s PMI Global Congress 2006—Latin America generated considerable excitement for the nearly 300 delegates who converged on the Grand Hyatt Hotel in beautiful Santiago, Chile in November.

Following the tradition of the first Latin American congress held last year in Panama City, Panama, this event provided world-class educational, professional development and networking opportunities for PMI members and project management stakeholders from throughout the region. What’s more, the location of the event epitomized the beauty and hospitality South America has to offer.

The kickoff of the congress was the Monday afternoon opening session, which featured remarks by PMI CEO Gregory Balestrero and PMI 2007 Board Chair Linda Vella. Mr. Balestrero recognized the contributions of project management volunteers—not only for PMI initiatives such as assisting with the revision of existing standards and development of new standards, but also for involving themselves in humanitarian initiatives by assisting regions adversely impacted by recent natural disasters such as hurricanes and the Southeast Asia tsunami.

The areas of focus for this congress spotlighted emerging trends in the profession, examined the project management culture, and explored best practices and lessons learned from personal and group experience. The educational sessions provided a wide array of learning experiences, and offered participants the opportunity to select from sessions in Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and English.

PMI scheduled several networking receptions throughout the event to enable attendees to meet friends (old and new alike), exchange information, and develop insight and experience from contemporaries in the region. From the opening session and the “Taste of Chile” receptions, to the coffee breaks and midday luncheons, delegates had ample opportunity to expand their horizons as well as their contact lists from those in attendance.
