You Can Earn Professional Development Units at PMI Global Congresses Toward Maintaining Your Credential

PMI supports the ongoing professional development of certified Project Management Professionals (PMP®) and the maintenance of PMP certification. PMI does this through its Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. Read more about the CCR Program.

What is a Professional Development Unit or PDU?

  • The PDU is the measuring unit used to quantify approved learning and professional service activities.
  • PMPs are required to complete a designated number PDUs in order to maintain their certification.
  • These activities must be related to project management topics that are substantially consistent with the knowledge areas and processes as outlined by A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) and involve appropriate expert resources.
  • Typically, one PDU is earned for every one hour spent in a planned, structured learning experience or activity.

PDUs earned at PMI Global Congresses

PMI Leadership Meeting activities, PMI Research Program Working Session and PMI Standards Program Working Session, the congress keynote speaker, presentations in the congress areas of focus, lunch exhibitor educational presentations and certain other congress activities will qualify for PDUs at PMI Global Congress. Exact PDU assignments for each eligible activity will be listed on the PDU worksheet in the congress Event Guide that all attendees receive on site.

Total PDUs earned for attendance at a PMI Global Congress will vary depending on the specific activities a PMP attends. PMP certificant can calculate their total PDUs earned at the Global Congress using the PDU Calculation Worksheet provided in the Event Guide. After determining their earned PDU total, PMPs should claim this PDU amount on a CCR Activity Reporting Form.

  • PMI Global Congresses are submitted as PDU Category 3 claims. The program number required for claiming PDUs earned at PMI Global Congress will be listed in the Event Guide. Only submission of the activity reporting form is necessary to claim PDU credit. Supporting documentation for participation at the PMI Global Congress should be kept in the PMPs Continuing Certification Requirements Folder. All PMPs should maintain a personal CCR folder with documentation that supports reported activities. This supporting documentation is only requested during a PDU claims audit.
  • The Leadership Meeting, Research Working Session and Standards Working Session require separate registration and in addition to the general congress registration. However, PDUs accumulated for these activities are claimed with other activities included with general registration for the congress. Calculations for PDUs earned through these activities are listed on the overall PDU Calculation Worksheet available in the congress Event Guide. All of these activities are registered under the same program number within PMI's Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.) program and are to be reported on the same activity reporting form. More information on the R.E.P. program.
  • SeminarsWorld® activities occurring before and/or after the congress also require separate registration and in addition to the general congress registration. SeminarsWorld PDUs for attending seminars must be claimed separately from congress activities. Each seminar is registered under different R.E.P. program numbers from those listed on the PDU Calculation Worksheet included in the congress Event Guide. Each seminar is to be claimed as a separate activity when requesting PDU credits. The seminar instructors will provide you with the appropriate program number for your particular seminar when you arrive on site.
